WASHINGTON, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Alysa Liu of the United States clinched the women's singles title at the 2025 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Boston on Friday, becoming the first American woman in 19 years to achieve this feat.
Skating to Donna Summer's MacArthur Park Suite, Liu continued her momentum from the short program to lead the free skate with six triple jumps, hitting her personal best total score of 222.97 points to stand atop the podium. Japan's three-time defending champion Kaori Sakamoto took silver with 217.98 points, and her compatriot Mone Chiba claimed bronze.
In ice dance, American duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates ranked first after the rhythm dance segment with a score of 90.18. Canada's Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier were in second place with 86.44 points, followed by Britain's Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson with 83.86 points.
Chinese ice dancers Ren Junfei and Xing Jianing failed to advance to the free dance, ranking 31st among 36 pairs with 56.05 points.
The Chinese figure skating team participated in the women's singles, men's singles, and ice dance events in Boston this year. However, only men's skater Dai Dawei progressed to the second round, securing a spot for China in the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games. Beyond the World Championships, the Chinese team has another opportunity to compete for Olympic qualification at the selection event scheduled for September in Beijing.
The World Championships continue on Saturday with the free dance and men's free skate. ■
